Seattle Teachers To Wear 'Black Lives Matter' T-Shirts For A Week, Sparking Debate
This is exactly what is wrong with education. It is supposed to be academics, not social engineering. We are far below other countries in education when we take time out of the curriculum to foster reading, writing and math. So while they spend this time on their protests, something else in the curriculum gets overlooked.
If cities want to make a difference, they could do it on their own time and make those t shirts address the real problem...and put this on the t shirts: "Stop Gang Violence!" How many times of innocent children been in the path of bullets in the inner cities? That's what matters!
About 1,000 Seattle Public Schools teachers will wear Black Lives Matter T-shirts all next week in what they say is a bid to raise awareness about racial injustice within the school district.
Throughout the week, they’re encouraging teachers to have race-related lesson plans and they’re offered resources to guide the conversation.
From the TV screens to social media to the classrooms at Garfield High, students are talking about racial injustices and Black Lives Matter.
“Some of them are for it, some of them are against it, some of them just don’t understand what it’s for and some of them think there’s no point to it and we should just get over it,” said Garfield High senior Bailey Adams.
The conversation sparked again after threats of violence were made at John Muir Elementary School where the group, “Black Men United,” planned to wear Black Lives Matter T-shirts and greet students.
The response is that many Seattle Public Schools teachers will wear Black Lives Matter T-shirts all next week. They’ve already pre-ordered 1,000 for teachers.
They’re not just wearing T-shirts. They’re changing the curriculum and dialogue in the classroom. Even providing resources and books to help teachers facilitate the conversations. But not everyone agrees with the method.
