Syria is not exactly an oil-rich country.

They had the infrastructure of a pipeline that flowed oil from Iraq to the Mediterranean Sea so it could be exported to Europe.

So yes they are not oil rich but that old infrastructure matter to Europe and even Russia and Turkey...

Especially to Russia.

Also Iran and China.

Imagine if you could connect Iran, Syria and Iraq to the pipeline in Afghanistan and flow it either way from Europe to China?
