The US slapped a 25% levy on Scotch last October. Since then, exports of the liquor from Diageo and smaller producers have slumped by nearly a third.

It is costing British jobs, tax revenues and profits. Not to mention pricing millions of innocent Americans out of one of life’s greatest pleasures.

The Americans did this in retaliation for a battle we’re not even part of — its never-ending trade spat with the EU.

More of the brexit dividend. Illustrating how we are at the mercy of populist dickheads like trump. Worse to come I think.

Trade with the US was made more difficult when the UK refused to open up your market to our agricultural products. But the fact is that trade with the US will not cure the many financial problems that lie ahead for the UK:

"A free trade deal with the United States could add just $4.3 billion to the UK economy over the next 15 years, the British government estimated Monday. The modest potential windfall underscores the difficulty of replacing the economic benefits of membership in the European Union."

If Scotland opts for independence and Northern Ireland merges with the Republic of Ireland it could become a "perfect storm" for England and Wales.

So tariffs imposed by the US for the UK's unwillingness to open their market to US agricultural products isn't your real problem. Your problems are much bigger than that.

Shitty in what way? As an economic trading bloc they have clout and offer real advantages to member countries in terms of internal free trade. The EU's stupidity centers on their social agenda which is propped up by their member contributions and spending efforts. The EU needs reform to focus on economics and not social engineering.

I'm American and have worked with British partners for some twenty years. The English, on the whole could care less about the US.

Its a perfect shitstorm now. And I agree that any deal with the US will not replace what we have with the EU. Brexit is an act of self harm that we will need to reverse at some point. The problem with US food products is that they are produced to lower standards than we are used to. It gives your producers an unfair advantage over domestic farmers and will lead to many of them going out of business. A race to the bottom.

That's a real load of crap statement. America has the most tremendous food in the world. If you look at the American people, we are the smartest, toughest, strongest people in the world- a direct reflection on our tremendous diet.

That's why people want to come here.

Thanks for the story. Libs here in America have been shooting the shit in recent months alleging that US tariffs are a tax on US consumers. Of course not true, as this story points out, its really a penalty on the importers.

But I am sure we will work out the differences as the UK allows more importation of Tennessee and Kentucky whiskeys into their realm, we'll relax levies on UK booze.

or, do you let your green weenies put unneeded restrictions on your food production, which is then used by domestic producers as an excuse for protectinism?

We dont want rates of food poisoning like you have. US food is regulated by the corporations who pay your politicians to look the other way. Our food is fine and is as God intended. You have tomatoes made from fish and beef from drugged up cows.

1. i was thinking of interfering in internal national polices.

I agree that countries should be able to maintain their values and culture without interference from the EU. All EU member countries are democracies and are represented by duly elected politicians reflecting the will of the people. The The EU has no business telling sovereign countries how to live. On the other hand it is imperative that trade, finance and all laws related to commerce within the EU bloc be shared to facilitate free trade between the member countries.

2. and yes. advantages to their members at the cost of external trade partners. good for them, shitty for US.

The whole idea behind smaller countries uniting is to better negotiate trade deals and to offset the power of larger countries; in order to seek a better deal.

3. if they want to go it all alone, and not have friends nor fair trade, we obviously can't force them. so, whatever.

Every country is trying to meet create the best terms and conditions for what they want. Friendship is not a driving force. You either have the leverage to negotiate a deal or you don't.

1. but the eu has demonstrated that it will not respect that.

2. question is, how aggressive are they in seeking that "Better deal".

3. that is a common belief system. one i do not share. if there is to be benefit gained from trading with us, i would rather it go to a friendly nation, rather than an enemy.

Is anyone surprised that Tainted Tommy thinks that the consumption of a toxic, brain-destroying drug, is “one of life’s greatest pleasures”?

Me, neither.

In any case, it's not like we don't produce enough of this harmful shit right here in the U.S., that we have any need to import overpriced versions from Europe.

Not to mention pricing millions of innocent Americans out of one of life’s greatest pleasures.

So what was it that you meant by “…one of life’s greatest pleasures”? In context, I cannot see that you meant it as anything other than the use of alcohol, a harmful, brain-destroying drug. If you meant anything else by that, then there is certainly nothing in your OP that hints at what it would be.

But given that it's you, I should probably just assume that you're currently so drunk, or so f•••ed-up on other drugs, that you don't even remember what you wrote six and a half hours ago, or what you meant by it.
