The city's executive leadership, Mayor Biskupski and City Police Chief Mike Brown, said President Donald Trump's immigration agenda is dead on arrival.
Mayor Jackie Biskupski, "said Thursday that her city is a 'welcoming community.' She continued, "Our police department is not enforcing federal immigration policy," and that "The Salt Lake City Police Department has a longstanding practice against officers inquiring about the immigration status of those they come in contact with on a day-to-day basis."
Chief Brown reinforced the Mayor's statement that the police department will continue its policy of not enforcing immigration law. "The residents in Salt Lake City need to have trust in their police officers," he said. "If police officers were forced to detect and detain immigrants who are here without authorization, this trust is easily broken."
Rep. Mark Wheatley, D-Murray, believes, "Trump's proposed policy would be 'stepping backward.'"
Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams issued a statement that the "county cooperates with federal immigration authorities and would continue to do so — particularly as their efforts relate to drug dealing", etc., but that he believes the immigration laws are broken.
The Provo City Police Chief says local police should not be involved in immigration policing.
The LDS Church has clearly made it clear that it is an immigrant friendly institution.
So, no, President Trump, no Utah for you!
