Peskov, quoted by the state-run media Russia-24, claimed Putin “enjoys absolute support from the population.”

“The president has not yet announced that he will nominate his candidacy. But if we assume that the president does, then it is obvious that in our country at the current stage no one can really compete with the President,” Peskov was quoted as saying.

They didn't say that they are cancelling elections. Actually, there were local elections even in the new Russian regions. Yes, Putin is very popular and have no real competitors, therefore they have no reason to cancel elections. Anyway, he may decide to suggest anybody else on this position, and that man or woman will win the elections anyway.

Here in the United States we have never canceled a presidential election because the incumbent was popular. We cannot know how much support there is for Putin, because it is impossible to do an accurate public opinion survey in Russia. In addition, there is no adversary press in Russia, so the Russians cannot learn what is really happening in Ukraine.

It's XXI century. It's impossible to hide more or less public information about the real situation in Ukraine from an average Russian, because almost everyone has a number of friends and relatives in Ukraine.
