Rural Values versus Urban Values

You said **** you to the majority of Americans, I guess you hate democracy huh?

Funny how there are people who say they love America but keep saying they hate the majority of Americans.

the urban culture, attitude, etc, is what I hate... that and the urban elitist attitude

I work in one of the worst urban cesspools around, DC, and you would not catch me living there or wanting to absorb anything from the bullshit culture... hence why I take the train out of that place and live in a more rural area 45 miles away

You did not say "**** the urban culture" you said "**** the urbanites"...More people in the U.S. live in urban areas than not....therefore, unless you lied before, you hate the majority of Americans.

Wish to backtrack now?

There is one issue that may serve as a paradigm between urban and rural values. gun control. Urbanites are directly threatened by gun violence and the country folks seem to think any and all gun control will take away their hunting equipment.

oo there is a prime example of urbanites not have a clue.....i dont hunt....i own guns....why? well the police are not a block away here....i live in a large rural county....it can take the police a minute to get here...i am entitled to protect myself and my home.

unless you really believe that rural areas are just norman rockwell paintings and we have no crime
I live in a small town that is less than an hour drive from downtown Pittsburgh. Whenever an election rolls around, there is shouting about how the Democrats want to take away our guns. Hunting in this part of the country is what skiing is to Vail. Not only a widely popular hobby, but an industry.

There is never a reasonable discussion on gun control. Only hyperbole. We understand the need for self defense. I just did not understand it's absolutely necessary to defend yourself with an automatic pistol equipped with a 40 round clip. But, the discussion always ALWAYS revolves around the totality of firearms, not the specifics.

I don't necessarily hate you, but **** you for your bullshit attempt at word manipulation... see how that goes?

You can make whatever assumption about me you wish.. just expect to be corrected when you are wrong

I stand by my dislike for urbanites and the urbanite culture... though I am sure there are a few urban individuals who go against the norm

You see.. I did not assume you were urbanite or whatever else... you; however, did lump me as an individual into a group that you believe to be worthy of ridicule... You have no info on me, and assumed.. I do have knowledge of urban culture and made no assumption... so indeed, **** off...

fyi, hicks stand by their dislike for urbanites and urbanite culture.

Define "urbanite culture". When I go to NYC or any other large east coast city, I try to absorb as much culture as possible. Living in a small town, cultural opportunities are rare and usually involve a truck and tractor pull or pro-wrestling match.

Pseudo multiculturalism... pretentious attitudes... false superiority complexes... "everything is ok if it makes you feel good" acceptance... the list can go on into the depths of urbanite culture

As for being in rural areas not having cultural activities?? You have got to be kidding me. Within 10 miles of my house I can visit museums, a cultural arts center for plays etc, art galleries, wineries, festivals, etc... and generally a better time all around than you get with similar things in the cesspool DC

Pseudo multiculturalism? could you expand on this? And if you think snobbishness is confined to city life, may I remind you that people are people everywhere and the defense of "country life" by way of smearing urban life seems pretty damn snobbish to those who hear it.

Pseudo multiculturalism... trying to look so accepting of all cultures but doing everything possible to ensure that separation of cultures is accomplished.. not seeing people as just people but labeling and separating along the lines of race, culture, and nationality in some supposed name of multiculturalism

Funny.. I do not defend the 'country' way of life... just as I do not defend the urbanite bullshit...

I'm still fuzzy on precisely what you mean by Pseudo Multiculturalism. I live outside Pittsburgh. here, we have all varieties of eastern European immigrant stock, along with all those diverse cultures. So far, things have worked out well. Of course, there are simple minded bigots who basically fear the unknown and push against multiculturalism. I'm afraid those poor ignorant souls will always have that taint of prejudice because they were brought up that way and have no real desire to learn much passed what they know already.

Are you as upset about the bigoted push back as I am, or do you see all multicultural efforts as a sham?

I live in a part of the country were we actually have towns, rather than living in un-incorporated portions of counties.

no, you deride the urbanite bullshit.

but not looking to pick a fight, per sa, i think these are good observations of both sides of the coin.

i recognize the forces which you call out about urbania, but remind that not everybody is charging in that same direction. instead, i think that city dwellers have a greater propensity to intermingle along lines of race and class, perhaps because of the sheer variety and density of people.

on the flipside, in your *ehem* defense of country life, you explained that the more rural area where you live isn't debase of culture - and you mentioned some pretty cosmopolitan shit. quite similarly to the folly of generalizing urban culture, the generalization of rural culture fails to account for all of that. my guess is that your proximity to the city does account for it, though, and even then, suburban offerings in terms of my idea of culture and entertainment just don't cut it.

what about life in the legit sticks... way out there where you're not in day-job city-slickin range?
