I always find this argument kind of silly. The only reason why "women's athletics" exists is because you have this silliness called Title IX that mandates schools set aside money for it, even though it's a money loser.

I would be all for giving out scholarships to women for ACADEMIC merit. Why we still keep this weird artifact from 19th-century elitism puzzles me.


When I was in college, I didn't get an "athletic scholarship." Instead, I joined the National Guard and paid for college that way, as well as working two minimum-wage jobs. So, Ms. Riley still gets her scholarship; she just didn't get her plastic trophy. I can't exactly break out the crying towels.

Now, at that time, UIC had an "Athletics Program". No Football program, as that was Urbana's cash cow. A basketball team that was a joke. They called their team the "Flames", which is hilarious given how close UIC to Boy's Town (Chicago's notorious gay neighborhood.) I think it was supposed to be a reference to the Great Chicago Fire, which is appropriate because the program was a ******* disaster.

In addition to taking out a lot of money to pay for a stadium no one went to, the entire program was paid for through student fees. In fact, 33% of fees went to the athletics program.

40 years later, no one cares about UIC athletics, but the students are still paying for it.
