A study published recently recorded adults’ brain activity during magnetic field manipulations, and the results suggest that the human brain can unconsciously respond to changes in Earth's magnetic fields. Such "magnetoreception" skills are common in migratory birds and sea turtles, which have a geomagnetic sense that supports a biological navigation system. The experiment detected a decrease in alpha-band brain activity in some participants that, say the researchers, were tuned to the magnetic field of the northern hemisphere, where the study was conducted.
