The company that owns Carrier will receive $7 million worth of tax breaks over 10 years from Indiana to keep 1,000 jobs in the state, the Wall Street Journal
reported Thursday.
Carrier confirmed the news Thursday in a
statement, writing that the deal is contingent upon factors including employment, job retention and capital investment.
The company this week reached a deal with President-elect
Donald Trump and Vice President-elect
Mike Pence to keep the jobs in the state, after announcing earlier this year it would shut down a plant in Indianapolis and move manufacturing to Mexico.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 15, 2016) – Millions of dollars were given to Carrier to keep their production plant in Indianapolis. The company announced last week that they were moving the plant, along with its 1,400 jobs,
to Mexico, in order to cut costs.
That announcement received a ton of national backlash and now, city and state governments may be demanding money back that Carrier was given to stay in Indiana.
Carrier cited high costs as the reason they decided to move the plant to Mexico. Carrier’s parent company, a Fortune 500 company, profited $56 billion in 2015.
