Here's my guess: Many foreigners feel ties to their country of origin, so that even though they enjoy the benefits of the U.S. of A, they want to keep their original nationality. I was once engaged to a girl from Mexico who felt that way. She had overstayed a visa but at that time had been given permission to stay under Reagan's amnesty. She said "I'm Mexican. 100 por ciento."

Maybe if you are not interested in anything other than money, you would hire illegals for as little as you had to pay them to get them. But there are millions of Americans who put their sense of right and wrong ahead of money. These are the people who return your wallet with the cash inside intact, who point out you gave them too much change, or that you didn't charge them the tag price on something you bought.

Without such people, the world would be a really sorry place.

I'm sure we have done business with people who are not here legally. We are a border state and our city is full of them. But it wasn't on purpose. When I was hiring people in our own small business, I was quite sure they were citizens. I would not have hired someone I knew was not.
