Regulators are getting more ridiculous

I'm all for this.

Consumers can make more informed decisions if they understand the health content of their meals.
Most people I know who are health conscious eat at home.

The government required labeling on all food sold in grocery stores more than a decade ago. This allows consumers to make better choices.

The market should be allowed to work. But as every student in the first class of Economics 101 knows, the market works best when people have as much information as they need to make an informed decision. The market works less well when one party to the transaction has asymmetric information over the other. There is too much regulation, but the best government regulation is regulation that makes the market work better. Food labeling is an example.

When people buy food, they often aren't making rational choices since choices are often driven by deep-rooted physiological and psychological impulses. That's why food companies spend tens of billions of dollars a year on marketing and product-testing, often at the detriment to our health. Giving people more information helps them make more rational and better choices.

As I stated before the issue is one of proper calculation, Packaged/canned food is created via mechanization, where they can be confident the exact same amount of each ingredient is added and their label information is accurate.

Asking a restaurant to weigh every single thing they put in, then weigh each portion as it is served is kind of ridiculous.

And this is coming form someone on weight watchers, who needs to know these things to track accurately. The thing is I know some places are doing the best they can, and I don't hold them to some high crazy standard.

The problem is we are a country of litigious assholes, and you know someone is going to sue these companies/establishments the second one of their calorie counts is off.
not if it is worded in generalities...the ''about calories'' or the ''estimated calories on the average plate''....

and believe it or not, restaurants do know how many ounces of meat or veggies or starches they are giving you... it's all part of running a restaurant....and planning the restaurant purchases for food....you plan to serve 50 meals of a certain dinner on your menu or certain ala carte items and you buy according to your projection of sales and how many ounces of meat etc. you will need to fulfill your projected sales.

It's the other stuff that goes on the plate, like the gravy and sauces that would be harder to estimate...and people adding extra sauce or 3 pats of butter to their mashed potatoes!

And also a big problem, as Rodishi mentioned, with the mom and pop restaurants, that mix up their hand written chalkboard menus with what they have left over or on hand that they simply feel like cooking... I don't think we should put them out of business or change their business model of cooking what ever they feel like, making them the mom and pop that people tend to love for their nightly specials...or new chalkboard menu items.

In our litigious society, it would be naive to think people will not go out of their way to make a buck off of this, finding places that are off on the counts, and then either reporting them, suing them, or even blackmailing them. Plus if you remove any real teeth from the law, the nanny-staters will throw a fit and not accept it.

I am a person who uses weight watchers to track, but I am also a reasonable person who only expects a place to get me in the ballpark, and I am willing to guesstimate when I have to. The idea is long term tracking, not being anal about every single morsel (and this is coming from someone with mild OCD).

I don't like government overreach either, but we as a nation are too fat. It would be one thing if we had decent health insurance and real options of healthy food, but we don't. Good tasting food is almost like a drug, it triggers brain senses that make you addicted to it. Perhaps we shouldn't "ban" unhealthy food, but instead require restaurants to sell a wide range of healthy, natural options.
Sounds like you are a professional victim. I eat healthy, why can't you? Addicted to junk food and it's someone else's fault? Maybe they should outlaw it because you can't control yourself.

Restaurants make food for taste, not health. It even sounds like porn when they describe the meal, I don't know whether to eat it or screw it.

Because I'm a single man who works a night shift job and wasn't taught to cook. I also don't like touching and cooking meat because I don't trust myself.

People should have choices when going out to eat, but hey, lets encourage obesity.
I couldn't follow all that. You can't cook a chicken? That's right up there with dressing. You put it in the oven for an hour at 350. You can improve on it but that's he basics. Who said there should be no choices eating out? If you can find a restaurant that serves healthy meals go for it.

This is a funny thread as regulators put in place by republicans seem to want to tell me what bathroom I can use and demand that I don't smoke that leaf. Look in the damn mirror.
^^^This is why Democrats are losing political ground mightily. Their members like Matt here can't discern what the difference is between male and females.

the best examples of how liberal govt regulations don't work was USSR/Red China which achieved about 20% of our capitalist standard of living. Next is American health care which costs 3-4 times what even socialist Europe costs. Thus we can assume deregulated capitalist health care would cost about 20% of what it costs now and add 10-20 years to our life expectencies.

Imagine if our cars cost 4 times more than same cars in Europe? Yet thanks to Democrats we seem too stupid to know what to do about it!

I'm not big on the government interfering in the economy, but one of the best things the government can do is to provide laws that give consumers more information.
Goodness! Out of one side of his mouth he says he's all for it, and out of the other side of his mouth he says he doesn't like gov interfering. How quisling.

well helping capitalism function is not really interfering.

Riiiiight.

Riiiiight.

translation: as typical liberal I lack IQ to respond substantively
No, you just don't have a clue as to what you are talking about. It's not the governments business what we eat. If we want to eat a pile of dog crap, that's my business. If the gov really wanted to help (they dont) they'd sell me mouth wash.

It's not the governments business what we eat..
no but it is their business to support capitalism which ideally requires informed decision making. Mandating information on labels helps consumers to make informed decisions if they as free consumers elect to use it.

And so, we are also stuck with many mindless 'corn babies' due to the policies that a few decided that it was their right to push on everyone with skewed regulations. It must have sounded really super to "control the food" so they could "control the people". The religions have done the same thing in controlling what they thought was right in their own eyes. The biggest scourge we have in this country is corrupt attorneys and people like Richard Marco Kovacevich who claimed basically while speaking to youth how much fun it was legally steal rather than work for wealth. He and his theft crew went on a hell of a binge and the people went along with it all for their own comforts. The lord gives people their hearts desires with that comes the results, be they righteous or wicked. People wanted to go to war against the US so they did. The people in the US wanted revenge so they got it. Now people are not happy with the results of all their desires? Lump it, live with, get on with life, because that is basically what we were told when they committed fraud against us with the courts help doing their lil' bit of fraud too.
