The ancient Greeks..............the first promoters of democracy in governance..................also labeled the process, "mob-acracy"......rule by the mob....rule by emotion....rule by demagoguery ....and. of course, rule by populism and referendums.

Brexit is a perfect example of the repercussions of a popular referendum vote based on emotions rather than contemplation.......Britain's Cameron must now regret promising voters such a referendum

There has always been a mistrust of pure democracy since a simple slim majority can become oppressive to the other almost half of the electorate......and that is why in our system we have a senate, the Brits have their "Lords" and most parliaments also have an "upper" chamber in their legislative processes.

As we all know, making a decision in a strictly reactionary manner based on emotions is neither good in our personal lives, nor is it preferable in our political system......Gun advocates after the carnage in Orlando often voiced their concern that no decision on weapons' laws should be made right after this tragedy.

So, referendum based decisions are pure and unadulterated democracy......but, as we will witness with Brexit, a lousy way to wisely and effectively govern.

The EU itself is a lousy way to govern, its bascaly responsible not to the people of Europe, but to the government's of Europe, and thus the elites in power.

People's main issue with the EU can be summed up in this article:

Shop starts selling meat in pounds and ounces after Britain voted to leave the EU

A law enforced by the EU in 1995 meant that all measuring devices used in trade or retail should display measurements in metric quantities.

But Darren Gratton said that a lot of his customers who voted Brexit wanted their meat sold in the older imperial method of pounds and ounces.

The butcher from Barnstaple, Devon, said: “The next step is to speak to North Devon Council and if they say we can go back to pounds and ounces then we will do.

And having the courts force the vast majority into Obamacare, Gay marriage and other issues is better? One swing vote on the SCOTUS can make not only history but law. Somehow that just doesn't seem right.

Besides, consider any issue a coin toss. One side wins the other loses. To say democracy is wrong because one side loses and the other wins makes not sense. Because to reverse the coin toss means the other side wins except now the outcome wasn't decided by the MAJORITY it was force upon the MAJORITY. Democracy may not be perfect but neither are any of the other options.

It is always the same with the left wing. They tell us what we should think and never deviate from thinking that their way of thinking is the only way. This is no different, you are calling the majority of those who broke with the establishment, stupid.

One lesson of Brexit is that such profound and far reaching decisions should NEVER be settled by a Democratic vote of 50% + 1.

Our Founding Fathers recognized that changing the Constitution should be difficult, and absolutely NOT by majority democratic vote. This vote in GB was madness. Exit should have required at least 60%.

Then entrance should have required the same vote.

The EU is a undemocratic Bureaucracy, beholden not to the people, but to the government's ruling over the people.

So you would deny the majority because you feel you are smarter?

Let's introduce referendum here.

We'll start with ballot initiatives regarding the gun control measures that have 90% support of the American people.

Link, I am going to call BS right now on the 90 percent claim.

How about a referendum on Gay Marriage. You know, like the one in CA that the majority voted for? But was struck down by old white judges? You mean a referendum like that? Or just referendums that have the outcome you desire?

The EU is a political abomination. What started out as a way to encourage free trade has morphed (via very undemocratic methods) into a centralized unelected bureaucracy which micromanages political and regulatory decisions. The Brits quite rightly want to escape.

what would your initiative be? Gun ownership in America is very popular. So what specifically would you want on the ballot? How about felons and ex-felons not being able to purchase a gun? Oh wait that is already law in most states but the state, and Obama, is already moving to change that law.

I know you'll say...."well, 57% is not 90%,,,,,Nonetheless

Poll: Most Voters Support Increasing Gun Control

ELI YOKLEY | JUNE 21, 2016

As congressional Democrats continue their push to tighten federal gun laws after another mass shooting, this time at a gay nightclub in Orlando, most Americans are on their side.

According to a national Morning Consult survey conducted in the wake of the Orlando shooting, more than half of voters (57 percent) said they support general efforts to increase gun control.

The support is higher among Democrats, more than eight in 10 (82 percent) of whom said they support strengthening gun laws. But even among Republicans, almost four in 10 (37 percent) say they support stricter gun control laws in the United States.
