One of the big news items this week is about the huge number of migrants who have died at sea while trying to reach countries where they can live their lives in safety plus have food in their bellies. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Mod - Edit: calling out individual members in an OP makes it a call out thread, these belong in Badlands.

More than 3,400 people have died in the Mediterranean this year trying to reach Europe, the UN refugee agency said Wednesday, urging governments to take more action to save lives.

More than 207,000 people have made the risky sea crossing since January, almost three times the previous high of 70,000 during the Libyan civil war in 2011, the UNHCR said.

Of these, a record 3,419 died, out of a total of 4,272 reported deaths worldwide on migrant vessels this year.

That's been a huge problem. Migrants are desperate - so much so they are willing to undergo incredibly dangerous routes to escape war or destitution. It's really sad. There was a recent incident where Egyption traffickers deliberately rammed migrant boats causing them to sink. Most of these people can't swim. They stood by and watched them drown. :(

All these tragic stories about the migrants losing their lives at sea reminds me of those leaving Haiti and Cuba in vessels which were unseaworthy. The sad part is that there will never be enough money to help all of these unfortunate people nor will the political landscapes in their home countries be changed so we will keep on reading about this.

No, you are right about that.

The situation as I see it is as if in the U.S. only Florida, without Federal help, would be responsible for saving the migrants from drowning as Italy is doing. The migrants get to Italy and then many go to other EU states as there are no borders. The EU should have a federal policy on this.

I see the dynamic duo is busy at it again. No rest for the weary it seems. Meanwhile, check with the Coast Guard on the West Coast and ask them who they have picked up trying to get into this country. You can also check with the Border Patrol to see how many they think are risking their lives to get across the desert. The sad thing is that there are so many of these people, and many of them are leaving their countries because of poverty or political unrest.

BULLSHIT there are borders in the EU and you still need to go through border control and have a passport to enter another country. All there is, is a free movement of EU citizens across those borders, non EU citizens cant roam at will and find they are held up by border police. Just as Palestine does not want the Jews we dont want the muslims, the big difference of course is the Jews have been invited the muslims haven't so they will be deported back to their country of origin as soon as possible

Why do you always, always have to show your ignorance of the facts. There are no border controls within Europe's Schengan Treaty Area.

"Twenty-two of the twenty-eight European Union (EU) member states participate in the Schengen Area. Of the six EU members that do not form part of the Schengen Area, four – Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania – are legally obliged and wish to join the area, while the other two – Ireland and the United Kingdom – maintain opt-outs."
