Nearly 50 million Americans have gone without health insurance for at least part of the past year — up from 46 million people in 2008, federal health officials reported Tuesday.
Those people included not only those Americans living in poverty, but an increasing number of middle-income people, according to a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"The bottom line is that uninsurance of young and middle-class adults increased by 4 million people from 2008 to the first quarter of 2010," CDC Director Dr. Thomas R. Frieden said during a news conference Tuesday.

What's more, the number of people without insurance for a year or more increased from 27.5 million in 2008 to 30.4 million in the first quarter of 2010, Frieden said. "That's an increase of 3 million of chronically uninsured adults."

These findings debunk two myths about health insurance, Frieden said. "The first myth is that it's only the poor who are uninsured. In fact, half of the uninsured are over the poverty level," he said.

"The second myth is that it's only healthy people who are uninsured and that young healthy people make a choice not to have health insurance. In fact, more than two out of five individuals who are uninsured at some point during the past year had one or more chronic diseases," he said

How many of the over 1000 pages of that bill have you read? How many pages has anyone really read? They need to repeal that bill because no average or even above average citizen would take the time to read it or know what is in it. Most Congressmen and Senators who voted for it do not even know what is truly in it. It needs to be dismantled and simplified. Bring it down to 100 pages or less so that politically minded people can and will take the time to read it and not as much junk can be added in.

By the way, how many American's were insured during the Revolutionary War, Civil War, or even WWI and WWII? The people seemed to get along alright then without it.

Are more gifts and greater government dependency the answers?

No, but I can see a few price controls and tighter debt enforcement going a long way. Most of the insured's medical expenses subsidize the uninsured and those unable, or unwilling, to pay. If more people paid a negotiated amount, as long as the hospitals and insurance companies aren't allowed to take advantage of that, I think that should help control the costs. Beyond that, the amount we already give in the form of Medicare appears to be used inefficiently, but I'm not going to pretend that I have a solution to that.

Those people who refuse to buy it shouldn't be allowed to turn around and rely on any government-subsidized care to cover their recklessness should their health necessitate it. And yet they will, and we'll have no choice but to subsidize them, because hospitals are not allowed (and really shouldn't be allowed) to turn away patients who can't afford care. And financially speaking, that's part of the problem with American health care.
