You can't look away, even though you may want to. You have to let the other races penetrate your conscious completely. Only then will you recognize them.

If you fail to, you are already hostage. Because then you will begin accepting them as fellow Americans in a generic American identity. Which means you become responsible for them - they become your brothers.

America is not a racial identity! You have to realize this over and over. America is a very tentative national identity, one that is becoming more and more precarious. First and foremost comes your racial identity; and only after this comes your identity as an American.

First, think of yourselves as white, asian, hispanic, jewish, black, whatever it may be. And of course those are very broad groups, obviously you would get much more specific. Only after that consider yourself American if you so choose. But "American" can never become a racial identity unless you choose to become confused, as I have shown.

First think of yourself as an American. The color of your skin should be far down the list.
