Religous answers also welcome.

My question is how are animals so fast and so strong (especially relative to their size) when they do not exercise?

For the most part. There are some exceptions, like birds who seem to fly several times per day, often long distances.

If you've ever had pets, you know what I mean. My cat would sit around all day licking his asshole when he wasn't sleeping or stetching/shapening claws. But when the need arose, he could sprint incredibly fast. Same with dogs. I've had a lizard (bearded dragon) as a pet, and he literally laid under a hot light on a warm rock all day. But once he slipped out of my hand and ran way faster than I could have caught him on his little three inch legs.

The strength I could see coming from big muscles, but you never gorrilas working out with weights. If they did, they would probably need a special heavy duty barbell to put enough weigh on it to be a challenge.

I've seen a lot of fat pets that aren't going to win any sprint races.

SHORT ANSWER:

Because their very existence is predicated on their strength and speed. Not strong enough, not fast enough and they die.

Mankind's survival depends on his brain. Reason, cognitive thinking, problem solving. If we are too slow or too weak to catch a meal, we just call Jim's Pizza or apply for food stamps (or hold someone up with a gun).

Really. It is that simple.
