The current President of Ukraine, V. Zelenskyy, said that his relatives had allegedly died at the hands of the Nazis during World War II.

See below for a quote from his CNN interview:
And my grandfather survived the entire war. His father and his mother were -- were killed in a terrible fire. The -- the Nazis set ablaze the entire village where they lived and where my grandfather was born.

I personally have doubts about this story for the following reasons.
When a person tells a lie, he usually avoids details because he does not know them.

Nazi war crimes on the territory of the USSR varied in nature depending on the period of the war.
Immediately after occupying a particular settlement at the beginning of the war, the Nazis deported or exterminated all Jews.

But the burning of entire villages by the fascists took place closer to the middle of the war between the USSR and Germany, that is, closer to 1943. That is, the Jewish relatives of V. Zelenskyy, in my opinion, could hardly have been in any Ukrainian village during that period.

There are no details in V. Zelenskyy’s story.
  • In his story, V. Zelenskyy - for some unknown reason - does not name the year when his relatives died.
  • In his story, V. Zelenskyy - for some unknown reason - does not give the name of the village where his relatives died.
Another factor, that makes one doubt that V. Zelenskyy's relatives really died at the hands of the Nazis, is V. Zelenskyy's strange leniency towards manifestations of Nazism in the Ukrainian army. Although it is Zelenskyy - according to Article 106 of the Constitution of Ukraine - who is the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

This summer, the newspaper Le Monde published the results of its investigation, which found hundreds of cases when Ukrainian army soldiers posted on social media their pictures on which they used Nazi symbols and salutes; one of these images is shown at the beginning of this article on the right.

As the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, V. Zelenskyy cannot help but know about this, but I personally have not heard anything about Ukrainian servicemen being held accountable for using Nazi symbols and salutes.
