I would say quite a bit has changed in nearly fifty years with regards to racism. I would also argue that they parties switched philosophies while many people didn't, leaving many conservatives in Southern states voting for Democrrats even today and yet they support very little of the current Democratic platform. They just don't follow politics closely enough to realize they are voting for the wrong party based on their beliefs. This is very common in the South. I meet supposed Democrats who, if given a list of policies from both parties, would check the most boxes by far for the Republicans
