I wouldn’t go out of my way to put the correct label of “he” on some dude like that only because she is so sensitive.
But if he went off on me like that, I probably would double down:
“I’m sorry sir, but you don’t appear to be a female so I naturally just assumed that you were a male. I’m sure that you, as an open-minded individual, can understand that.”
I’d add: “Now, please pick up the merchandise you just kicked to the floor. That’s not your property, unless you wish to pay for all of those items, or unless you want me to call the police.”
And if he invited me to meet him outside, again? I’d say, “Well, I don’t make it a habit of striking a woman. So, sure. I’d be pleased to knock the stupid out of you, sir.”
