PATERSON – A city still recovering from the conviction of its mayor last year endured another blow to the public trust with the recent arrests of three Paterson police officers by federal authorities.
Hours after officials on Friday announced the latest charges accusing a cop of selling heroin, cocaine and marijuana – including allegations that he used his marked police vehicle for some of the drug deals – Paterson Press asked more than 30 city residents for their thoughts about the arrests.

Two Paterson police officers arrested on April 11 – Jonathan Bustios and Eudy Ramos – were charged with violating people’s civil rights for allegedly making illegal traffic stops, conducting improper searches and taking money, guns and other items from the people they pulled over.
The third officer arrested, Ruben McAusland, was recorded making numerous drug deals with a confidential witness from last October until April 1, according to the United States Attorney’s Office.

A jury has found two former Baltimore police detectives guilty for their role in a sprawling police corruption scandal, bringing the total number of convicted officers to eight. Who were the members of the Gun Trace Task Force (GTTF)?
When the Baltimore City Police Department created the GTTF, it was intended to be an elite squad of highly-trained officers tasked with seizing illegal guns. Instead, a trial in federal court has revealed that the officers went rogue, and used their power to steal money, drugs and guns, and terrorise the people they stopped.
In some cases, they even resold the very drugs and guns they were supposed to take off the streets.

Several members of a Chicago police gang team have been stripped of their police powers amid a federal criminal probe into allegations they ripped off drug dealers, law enforcement sources told the Chicago Tribune.
The nearly yearlong investigation by the FBI and Chicago police Internal Affairs Division focused on a sergeant and several officers on the department's Area Central gang team that operates in much of the South Side and part of the West Side, sources said.
The sergeant and at least three officers were stripped of their police powers, sources said. Authorities conducted searches of at least two of the officers’ homes Tuesday, but no arrests have been made. Criminal charges are expected to be filed, though, according to sources.

Three Dallas police officers facing criminal charges in a gambling investigation turned themselves in Thursday, and a fourth has a warrant out for his arrest.
A criminal investigation into Senior Cpl. Edrick Smith, who was arrested in December on a gambling charge, led to charges against the four officers, according to a letter sent to City Council members Wednesday.
Smith faces new charges of money laundering and engaging in organized criminal activity, according to the letter from Assistant City Manager Jon Fortune.
