My dad worked for a place called "Ameron" or something like that. Welding light poles. They were just off High St. next to the park there. It was sketchy, even back in the mid 70's, but at that time, Oakland was livable.Yep; I lived just down the freeway from there, off Fair Oaks. Richmond was getting bad then too. I used to go to Oakland to a southern style restaurant. Didn't know it was in a black area. Good food, and I went there every couple of weeks for two years, and never got bothered; I guess the owner had gang connections had and didn't want any of his customers screwed with. Staff was always great, and some of the regular customers were good people. Can't say much for the street trash outside, though. Great pecan pie and pork chops, okra, and corn on the cob.
From what I've read and seen, not anymore.
