5 officers struck by car after 'teen takeover' hits Chicago's West Side — as 19 people hurt in shootings

Yep; I lived just down the freeway from there, off Fair Oaks. Richmond was getting bad then too. I used to go to Oakland to a southern style restaurant. Didn't know it was in a black area. Good food, and I went there every couple of weeks for two years, and never got bothered; I guess the owner had gang connections had and didn't want any of his customers screwed with. Staff was always great, and some of the regular customers were good people. Can't say much for the street trash outside, though. Great pecan pie and pork chops, okra, and corn on the cob.
My dad worked for a place called "Ameron" or something like that. Welding light poles. They were just off High St. next to the park there. It was sketchy, even back in the mid 70's, but at that time, Oakland was livable.

From what I've read and seen, not anymore.

The West side of Chicago is where all the crime takes place, it is really a bunch of small suburban towns that have been taken over by gangs that are, obviously, in conflict with one another. Just avoid that for the downtown and you are generally safe in Chicago.

It's a great city, but shit can happen anywhere.
I understand the south side is very safe. LOL

I had always assumed it was white, considering it was a Hell's Angels town. Obviously it changed a lot after the war. Nobody would go with me to eat there. lol

It was a pretty even mix of races and cultures back then. Though I was in my early teens then, so what did I know about culture? lol

We got high and rode our bikes. I never lived in Oakland, but was in a little town just south of Hayward called Union City.

Yes, 'around the corner' on the Bay from me. Passed the exits many times.

WTF would anyone want to go to Chicago? Was there a long time ago for business and stayed in the loop.

We have friends in Des Plains, off Wolf Rd. It's not bad, nice and clean. Can't say much for the political life there. The last few years, they would rather come here instead of us going there.

When I was a kid streaking was the fad.

Streaking was kinda cool, definitely much more benign than these street takeovers. I remember catching a game in Lakeland, Fla. in 74. A naked girl got onto the field, ran to the mound and kissed our pitcher, a guy from Seacaucas, NJ. And then she ran over to our bullpen where she was picked up and driven away. The cops came a little later, trying to make like it really mattered, but it didn't. The rumor at the time was that our GM arranged the whole thing. Everyone left with a smile on their face.
