Not really. I heard they did not allow a German family which was on holidays there to go to a Polish mall and to buy there some goods. I guess that's why Poland needs every year many billions from the EU so they hate the EU. It's more easy to get German money via EU then to sell some goods to Germans in Poland.

The GDR was ruled by the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) for 40 years - without ever being legitimised by free, democratic elections. The SED was able to maintain its power through a massive party and security apparatus. An important cornerstone of this system was the Ministry for State Security (MfS).

The MfS was established under the direct guidance of the Soviet secret service in the course of the founding of the GDR. It was a domestic secret police force, investigative agency and foreign intelligence service all rolled into one. The MfS had 17 remand prisons of its own, was under arms and had its own guard regiment. It was subject exclusively to the control of the SED party leadership and not to parliamentary control or the control of a free press, which did not exist in the state-controlled media system of the GDR.

Accordingly, the MfS saw itself as the ‘shield and sword of the party’. From this perspective, ideas and attitudes of people in the GDR that deviated from the SED norm were seen as critical and often persecuted as ‘anti-state endeavours’.

One explanation for the behaviour of people who rejected socialism, particularly in the early years, was the influence of Western ‘enemy headquarters’. The popular uprising of 17 June 1953 was also attributed to foreign influences. It had a traumatic effect on the Stasi itself, which gave way to a motto: never again should they be surprised by their own people and their rejection.

In order to track down and eliminate ‘hostile-negative elements’, the MfS henceforth tried to penetrate all areas of life of the GDR population. Depriving the ‘enemies of socialism’ of their power at an early stage was intended to secure the party's power forever.

The Ministry for State Security was organised along military lines and had a strictly centralised structure. From 1950 to 1953 it was headed by Wilhelm Zaisser, from 1953 to 1957 by Ernst Wollweber and from 1957 until almost the end by Erich Mielke, who headed the ministry for well over 30 years.

The MfS covered the GDR with a network of 15 district administrations (for the 15 GDR districts) and 209 district offices (in the 209 districts of the GDR) as well as a good half dozen local ‘object offices’. The areas of responsibility were continuously expanded over the years. At the same time, the number of employees increased. In 1989, around 91,000 people were working full-time for the State Security. ...

The MfS had a network of IMs [unofficial collaborators] in all population groups in the GDR, which enabled nationwide surveillance of groups of people to whom MfS employees who were openly recognisable as such would not have had access. There were IMs in many groups and organisations critical of the regime, such as in artistic and church circles, so that the MfS was informed about most of the activities of ‘hostile-negative persons’. There were almost 400 IMs in the ranks of the Catholic Church in the GDR.

In the course of its existence, the MfS had around 624,000 people as unofficial collaborators.
