I was just wondering does anybody here have at least one Pitbull and one cat? The place I currently live I cannot keep a Pitbull, but I have a cat and hopefully I am moving soon to where I would be allowed to keep one. The only thing is that I don't want my kitty to get hurt.

Especially since she didn't grow up with one and I'm afraid that she might accidentally set the dog off. One of my old neighbors even had a cat that was killed by a Pitbull so trust me I've heard the horror stories even though I really love Pitties. Does anybody know if a cat and a rescue Pittie could actually live a happy life together?

Cat texted again and said she would tolerate a Golden Retriever, or Lab.

I do love Golden Retrievers as well and Irish Setters, Dalmatians, Sheepdogs, Collies, Beagles, Shelties, and Chihuahuas just to name a few but Pitties really are just big babies once you get to know them. 🥰

It's not that I don't like pitbulls, it's more that I love cats, and it's not worth the risk you would be putting your kitty in.
Have you ever had a pitbull?

No that's why I'm asking. I'm sort of agreeing with you though but I have also heard that some Pitbulls get along fine with cats. Looks like it too. 😊

Why do you want a dog? Why not just get another cat? Do you or will you have a fenced yard for dog?

As of right now no, but if I got a dog now I would just take it out on a leash. I also know that Pitbulls are pretty strong animals though, but can't I love both cats and dogs?

Of course you can. You just need to be responsible in picking a dog breed that has a temperament accommodating to cats.

We have 2 pitties and one cat. The cat was here first, and the pits were pups at the time. All pets had the run of the house, except I didn't let the dogs in my room for a long time, so the cat would have a safe place to escape too if needed. Generally dogs want to sniff cats, like they sniff everything else which is normal dog behavior......but it's not normal cat behavior so cats usually run when dogs come close, which invites dogs to chase them and opens the door for big trouble in the end.

Anyway, we kept a close eye on them all and if things started to escalate, we'd separate them all. Now 3 years later, we worry more about the cat hurting the dogs. Sometimes they all get along fine and sometimes the cat is just a *****....meaning she has swatted at the dogs if they are within reach and/or hissed or growled at them, just because she could and that sometimes escalates the dogs.

As for your situation and wanting to get a dog (any breed), look for one that has been around cats, maybe set up a meet & greet with the cat and dog together if you can and if not, keep your eye on them and don't leave them alone together for any length of time. If you need to go somewhere, put the dog in a kennel and the cat in another or in a room and shut the door until you get back. Depending on the age of the dog, it can take several months to adjust to it's new family pack rules. And establishing rules and limits from the start, is very important.

They are bred to kill. They are just little sweethearts until they rip the arteries out of a little 6-year-old's neck. Most of the shelter dogs are Pitts or Rotties or a mix. It isn't because the owners don't know how to handle a dog. It is because of the dog. On the other hand, a Lab or Retriever is loyal till the day they die. They are wonderful companions, and trustworthy.

It depends on the cat's temperament, size and strength. If it's just a docile little kitten the dog will be fine.

Will a rescue facility just hand over a pit bull to someone admittedly diagnosed with legitimate mental disabilities is what you should be asking yourself if you expect to be taken seriously.

Do you yourself require qualified supervision in aspects of your life? Do you even have a drivers license?

Thank you!!!
Sorry but it's irresponsible to get a pitbull hoping it will get along with a cat. Sure some cats and pits are fine together, BUT there are no stories of cats killing pitbulls for a reason.

Interesting, but aren't you afraid that your Pitties will turn on your kitty someday?

Okay, I'm just curious, have you ever actually been around Pitbulls before because I've been around a lot and I never got growled at by one or bit, however I got growled at by a Beagle and both growled at and bit by a Chihuahua before.

The first time that I ever got bit by a dog in my life too. I'm not holding it against the breed though, I'm just saying. Both Chihuahuas and Poodles (another favorite of mine) have been known to be extremely aggressive. Yet nobody ever talks about this.

Tagging Yarddog because I know that they (I don't know if they're a man or a woman) have at least one Pitbull but I'm not sure if they have any cats though, but I would really be curious to hear their thoughts on this.
