A 16 yr old kid spends 3 yrs in jail awaiting trial -- with 1 and half of those years in solitary confinement...only for them to dismiss the charges..and due to the trauma of being in SI that long -- he committed suicide not long after he was released....he could have got out sooner if he took a plea -- but he stood firm and said he is not going to admit to something he didn't do.....

New York’s justice system failed Kalief Browder. Now the city will pay his family $3.3 million.

Browder’s incarceration and 2015 suicide called national attention to the ways the justice system irreparably alters the lives of people of color.
