2008 U.S. Presidential Candidates Travel Scorecard
How Does Sarah Palin Rank in Foreign Travel Experience?
Inquiring traveler minds want to know. Of course, John McCain earned big points in our U.S. Presidential Candidates Travel Scorecard earlier this year. And while weve yet to complete a full analysis of his new running mate, initial reports on the Alaska governor are not promising.
-Sarah Palin:
Take this passage in the New York Times: Ms. Palin appears to have traveled very little outside the United States.
In July 2007, she had to get a passport before she visited members of the Alaska National Guard stationed in Kuwait, according to her deputy communications director, Sharon Leighow. She also visited wounded troops in Germany during that trip.
Kudos for visiting Kuwait and Germany, but why no passport before then? Beyond that, a spokeswoman has said she has visited Ireland but offered no details.
-Barack Obama
Passport Analysis: Raised in Hawaii and Indonesia, son of an American mother and Kenyan father, Obama has multi-culti street cred thats hard to beat. And he gets extra credit for penning a travel memoir, Dreams from My Father, chronicling the senators first visit to Kenya, where hes claimed as a native son. This is the guy wed like to go overland with from Capetown to Cairo
World Travel Score: Four and a half stars out of Five
-Joe Biden
Passport Analysis: Theres nothing like dodging Janjaweed raids to liven up a road trip. Iraq, Afghanistan, Darfur, the Balkansthree decades on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee have seen Biden land in the worlds hottest conflict zones. Our go-to guy for places to avoidwere sure hes got strong opinions on Burmabut not the ideal source for where to find the best tapas in Madrid.
World Travel Score: Four stars out of Five
-Mike Huckabee
Passport Analysis: The former Arkansas governor and Baptist minister touts his extensive travel to the Middle East over 35 years, including nine trips to Israel. Who knew? If he fails to get the nomination, hes got a bright future as a Holy Land tour guide
World Travel Score: Three and a half stars out of Five
-Alan Keyes
Passport Analysis: Turns out the devoutly Christian, Ph.D.-holding former talk radio host has an impressive global footprint. An Army brat, Keyes lived in Italy as a kid, studied in Paris as a college student, then entered the Foreign Service. He met his wife while serving as a desk officer in Bombaya travel coup unequalled by anyone else on the ballot.
World Travel Score: Four stars out of Five
-John McCain
Passport Analysis: The original adventure traveler politico. It wasnt exactly hiking with the hill tribes, but five and a half years at the Hanoi Hilton ought to count for something. McCain gets our hardship post award for longest time in residence abroad. And extra points for parachuting in.
World Travel Score: Four and a half stars out of Five
