Our first admendment rights are all but gone

Back during the McCarthy era liberals were outraged (rightly so)by the Hollywood blacklists of suspected communists. The argument of "they're free to express an opinion and the bosses are free to not hire them" didn't go very far. If you can be physically harassed and deprived of property then you don't have freedom of speech, period.
Today liberals are simply brain dead. It's all about what they think is OK, what other people think is criminal.
The difference between McCarthy and Sterling is the government acted during the McCarthy era to ruin lives. There is no government involvement in the Sterling case. The marketplace is punishing Sterling, not congressional indictments.

You didnt read my post. During the McCarthy era Hollywood maintained a black list. Anyone, actor, writer, whatever, on that list could not get work. The government had nothing to do with it.
The marketplace is not punishing Sterling. The NBA is. ANd they are a monopoly.

Actually, I disagree. When Barry took a stand - he was representing the government. Obama's words carry the weight of the entire government.

The FBI and HUAC colluded to list names for the Hollywood executives to blacklist. Only Sterling's paramour did the dirty work here.

I may be completely off base here, but I don't believe the NBA can "take" his team. Basically, the team will return to the obscurity that it enjoyed in the late 80s and 90s and up until the early 2000s.

They won't be able to sign players, keep players and only the bottom tier of the NBA draft will be there - pretty much as it has been since the team went to LA.

What the hell does Sterling care? He stood by this team the entire time it was fecal matter - so it's nothing more than a write off for a guy with a net worth of nearly 2 billion dollars.

I "think" that the NBA can revoke his license and ban him from the game (as they have done) but for them to go any farther than that would probably be headed to the SCOTUS.

They can take his team (according to the NBA bylaws) if he is caught fixing games. Their bylaws list rare and very specific offenses that could merit having his team taken away from him.

On this one a suspension and a fine is the most they can do.

Under the table - they have to drive him out. If they don't, it will surely come back to bite them in the ass.

Distinction without a difference.

But he did not list any punitive actions for the NBA to take.

Ever heard of the "court of public opinion"? The statement that Barry made yesterday set the stage to open the floodgates. I am not saying that Barry can't make a statement - I'm just waiting (with baited breath) for the day he comes out and makes a statement against Farakhan or Sharpton or Wright. Yeah, I'm sure that statement will be forthcoming.

I dont know why Obama feels the need to flap his gums over every incident like that. He needs to shut the fuck up.

What standing might one logically expect from any amendment to The U.S. Constitution when the base document itself has been shredded, smoked, and totally abandoned by those sworn to uphold it?

They had to suspend him for life - no other option.

Blame Bush, blame Obama, blame the girl (like 60 years his junior) who he was cheating on his wife with, whatever ...

The guy did it to himself.

I agree to the point that this is being blown way out of proportion (as it is ANYTIME a white person is involved). If we used EQUAL STANDARDS - Jeremiah Wright, Louis Farakhan, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would have been run out of business years ago.

These liberal Nazis HAVE to jump on this. They will be doing this constantly between now and November in a feeble attempt to deflect from OBarrycare. I mean, C'Mon - they are dying here and they know it - so what do they do? RACIST RACIST RACIST RACIST RACIST RACIST RACIST RACIST RACIST RACIST RACIST RACIST RACIST RACIST RACIST.

Again - the NBA has known about Sterling from day one. This bullshit feigned outrage is ridiculous.

No other option? OK. Why didm''t they do it 15 years ago? You folks aren't listening...the NBA has ALWAYS known about Sterling. He was sued countless times for discriminatory Renting practices. THEY HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN WHAT THIS OLD FART IS.

Such outrage and self-righteous indignation from the NBA and it's players.....

If I was a Conservative, I'd want no discussion of racism either. I'd want to focus on winning an election and let fellow bigots do their thing.

If I was a Conservative, I'd want to deflect attention away from anything that gives my ideology and fellow Conservatives a hard time. I don't blame you at all for your faux outrage. If I was a Conservative, I'd go for the easiest slam possible because if I was a Conservative, I'd lack the imagination and idealism it takes to be a Liberal.

Oh C'mon! My Outrage??!?! Surely you joke? I am joyous. You guys are going to take an ass-whooping of Biblical proportions in November. What the hell do I have to be mad about??

They had to suspend him for life - no other option.

Really?

So they are NOTHING more than ventriloquist dummies? Say, who is it with his/her/its hand stuffed in their backs?

I don't know who has their "hands stuffed in their backs" but from a purely practical standpoint, the NBA had no other option. They tried to float out a bigger fine and a one-year suspension and the outage was so fast, so furious, and so overwhelming, they had to retract that and boot the guy for life.

Forbes estimated the worth of the clippers at $575 million in January. Sterlings net worth was estimated at $1.9 billion by Forbes.

So he just kissed 25% of his net worth bye bye.

I do not agree with one ounce of what that LA clipper owner said. But he said it in his own home .. Our freedom of speech is a thing of the past. I hope you liberals are happy

what? you are stupid

I am not seeing this as a huge first amendment issue.

This is more just evidence that racism isnt the problem the left wants to pretend it to be. if it were, more people would be supporting this guy.

sure.....another post from an alternate reality.....:cuckoo:

Again, when did Putin become the darling of the right?

Oh yeah, never. The left doesn't like him because he's not leftist enough. So they pretend the right loves him. What a joke.

If I had to venture a guess, based on this board, it would be because there have been some 'right' posters who have said they consider Putin a better leader than Obama.

Which in no way makes us Putin fans.

when it comes to bashing obama, you guys will open your legs for anyone...So yeah Putin fans you are when it suits your needs.
