They begged the government to get involved in their private lives (marriage), now they have to beg the government to intervene in their private lives (divorce).

If there is one thing I learned after years of being in divorce courts, people that have lived together long term without being married seldom have successful marriages once they get married. This goes for gays, normals or lesbians. I say seldom because even though I've never encountered one, they might actually exist someplace.
