The first, and most glaring, deficiency of the LCS is that, as a recent Pentagon’s Director of Operational Test and Evaluation report states, the “LCS is not expected to be survivable in high-intensity combat.” While the Pentagon has used similar language in previous reports, the level of detail explaining why the boat wouldn’t survive a real fight is unprecedented.
The report indicates the ship’s vulnerability is inherent in its design. In dry Pentagonese, the LCS does “not require the inclusion of survivability features necessary to conduct sustained combat operations in a major conflict as expected for the Navy’s other surface combatants.” Thus, despite having “combat” in its name, the LCS is pretty lousy at fighting enemies
3 Reasons Canceling the Littoral Combat Ship Was the Right Call - US News
It will be a great day when the Navy finally gets rid of this program and finally gets back to the business of building surface ships that meet the needs of the Navy rather than these "fantasy projects" that have little of anything to do with surface warfare and more to do with keeping the contractor in business. I have no idea what the Navy of for that matter was thinking when they decided that " one size fits all " will work in surface combatants. In an effort to save money they ended up creating a ship that cannot defend itself and for that matter cannot complete the mission it was intended to do and yet this year DoD orders 1.6 Billion dollars more of these things. One would think the F-35 would be a good example for the Navy to follow in what not do to when it comes to weapons purchases, but sadly the Navy is deeply involved in that "one size fits all" debacle too. In the end as the article states and I agree with completely, this "one size fits all" generally means " one size fits none"
