Lincoln was right to show mercy. He knew there were many Southern leaders who had opposed secession and who had no problem with the abolition of slavery. He also knew that the Radical Republicans wanted to exploit and ravage the South to increase their political power.

Having said that do a poll about Lincoln and nearly all the unfavorable opinions would come from Conservatives, or the reactionary wing of conservative thought. I have been on these boards long enough to see the trash that many conservatives post about Lincoln.

Lincoln was progressive for his age. Lincoln was in favor of big infrastructure politics and a federalist who sought to hold the union together.. Lincoln has as much in common with today’s Republican Party as Storm Thurmond has with the today’s Democratic Party.

I think we are all glad that in 1860 the Republican party had morals.

Now Republicans are trying to convince Americans that African Americans- who reject the Republican Party- are just too stupid to understand that they are voting wrong.
