Communism gets a lot of stuff wrong, but on this point Marx was spot-on.
He predicted the end stage of communism would be the withering away of the state. Turned out he was correct!

The Bolshevik empire collapsed in 1989. Gorbachev tried to trick 15 independent states into a new, ‘more democratic’ version of the Bolshevik empire. Of course nobody wanted it. In 1989–1991, salaries in the three most important cities — Miensk, Kyiv, and Moscow — were around 25–30 USD; it was a Nigerian or Upper Volta–level salary. Many Western commentators here don’t understand the nature of a Mongol empire (ulus). A Mongol (Bolshevik empire was a Mongol ulus) empire can exist only as long as it expands.Communism gets a lot of stuff wrong, but on this point Marx was spot-on.

Where could the USSR empire expand? They tried in A‑stan, they tried in Africa (homo sovieticus hated to give money to the black people for free, so the Politburo became very unpopular)
