My personal opinion is he was throwing a bone to those saying he needed people in his administration who knew their way around DC. When Trump got that Bolton never meet a war or military engagement he didn't support and that didn't line up with Trumps views he wisely got rid of him and Bolton has been butthurt over it ever since. Bolton is a lifetime inside the beltway insider who has made a career floating from administration to administration pushing for U.S. military action and promoting it on cable news.
