Ohtani will pitch tonight as an "Opener".

Reports are that Ohtani clocked a hundred once during his short spot.

He is a generational talent, possibly even unique in all of BB history.

One wonders how the historic greats, especially Ruth, would have done if they had had good training and conditioning.

Used to be if you throw 100mph you chose your spots to use it.
Now they will throw three pitches over a hundred to just one batter
I was taught the most important four aspects of pitching:

1. location
2. movement
3. change of pace
4. velocity

Usually in that order.

A good Pitcher throws strikes
A great Pitcher makes the strikes look like balls and the balls look like strikes

And it's often folly to do that. Major league hitters can adjust very quickly, and often have no problem timing a fast ball and jumping all over it.

I saw a big 6' 8 kid throwing 101 in the college world series! I have to say it looked pretty fluid, but it still has be a lot of torque on that arm.

Every MLB team is looking for 100 mph arms. So pitchers are pushing themselves beyond their physical limits to get there. Most of them pay a heavy price. Nolan Ryan never had a significant arm injury until the very end of his career at age 46! He was a freak of nature.

In 1986, Ryan was advised by Dr. Frank Jobe to undergo Tommy John surgery for a ligament tear in his elbow, but he opted not to have the procedure. He was concerned about the recovery time and felt he could manage the injury with rest. he led the league in strikeouts for the next 4 years...striking out 301 in 89 at the age of 42....including 2 no hitters in 90 and 91....
