The young woman was 16 - see Ohio teens guilty of rape, face year-plus in jail - or search for the story yourself. The perps were tried as juveniles - much of the sentencing is mandatory, as I understand it. Especially the label of "sexual offender". The court could have waived them into adult court - where the penalties would have been harsher & longer.

Yah, all three of these need counseling & work on taking responsibility for their actions. Nonetheless, the definition of "rape" is set in statute - just as the definition of "kiddy porn" is set in statute. If the perps didn't know those definitions before, they certainly do now.

Their parents, the other witnesses, the parents, possibly the coach - an investigation is ongoing into who knew what, who should have reported. It sounds like more prosecutions will follow. God help that town, from the reports of threats against the young woman & her family, the place is coming apart @ the seams. But yes, they will all need a lot of work to try to get back to some semblance of normality. & I'm not sure that it's doable - once explosive charges like these are out in public & jail terms served, it's v. hard to put the pieces back together.

Yah, the young woman acted foolishly - drinking to the point of passing out - if that's what happened. But the two young men could have chosen to leave her alone, or make sure she got home unmolested, or any number of other choices. They made, instead, some v. bad choices - criminal choices. They should count their blessings that the court didn't remand them to stand trial as adults.

You need counseling. Someone being drunk does not mean they can be assaulted in anyway because they are vulnerable. Someone being incapacitated does not give other people the right to assault him/her. What about street people, drunks or addicts on the street who are incapacited. Is it okay for others to assault them, beat them up, rape them because they are helpless, unconsious, unaware?

Anyone who thinks this drunk girl is responsible for being assaulted is a very, very sick person and needs therapy.

On the other hand, the boys who assaulted her were very aware and conscious of their acts and should be punished, recieve serious punishment. They should have much more time in jail than a year, and they do indeed need to carry for the rest of their lives the stigma of being sexual predators. If they had beaten up some addict or homeless person in an alley, they'd carry for the rest of their lives the stigma of that conviction: there is no difference here.
