REV. AL LOSES MATCHING $$
By VINCENT MORRIS
March 30, 2004 -- WASHINGTON - The Federal Election Commission yesterday ruled that former Democratic presidential candidate Rev. Al Sharpton is not eligible for federal matching campaign funds.
The decision was confirmed by an FEC spokesman, who added that the agency isn't taking final action on the matter for another 20 days to give the Sharpton campaign time to provide more documentation to prove that it's entitled to the money.
The FEC voted earlier this month to give Sharpton's presidential campaign $100,000 in taxpayer matching funds, while also investigating its questionable finances. In particular, it wanted to probe whether Sharpton loaned or gave his campaign more than $50,000, which would make him ineligible for the matching taxpayer funds.
