The debt ceiling has to be raised in order to pay for things we've already spent money on. If we don't raise the debt ceiling, then we go into default. This is not to say I approve of the most recent budget, but if your wife goes out and spends 10 grand on clothing and furniture, you don't protest by not paying that credit card bill. It only hurts you in the long run.

No, they could refuse to increase it and cause us to be in default which in such a case, would ruin our credit rating to the point we could never borrow again with any reasonable interest rates.

Again, it's not much different than when you use your credit card. You buy this and buy that, but if you don't pay the bill, your creditors increase your once low interest rates plus add on a penalty that you agreed to when you obtained the credit card.
