Former President Obama joined a Zoom call with Texas state House Democrats on Thursday, calling the Republican redistricting effort in the state a “systematic assault on democracy.”

“What we all recognize is we can’t let a systematic assault on democracy just happen and stand by,” Obama said.

“And my hope is that rather than have a race to the bottom where every district is predetermined based on how it’s drawn, that over time, the American people, ideally with the help of the courts, realizes that there’s a better way,” he continued.

Texas Democratic state lawmakers fled the Lone Star State two weeks ago to break quorum and prevent a vote on a new redistricting map that would give the GOP five additional seats in the 2026 midterms.

Comment:
Barry Obama lied again.
The Texas population has increased by over 3 million.
Giving those 3 million new people representation in congress increases our democracy.
Obama wants to deny those people representation in congress which decreases our democracy.
Now if Barry is opposed to gerrymandering then he must demand that Democrat states undo their gerrymandering first.

Are you ******* retarded?

We had a census. Texas had a redistricting in 2021.

That's how it works.

Now, I would be all for ending the absurd gerrymandering all states do to get secure seats for their party.

OK
So you want to deny people their representation
The congressional allotment per state is only changed every ten years with the census. That’s how it works

The population of any particular state obviously changes on a daily basis. It would not be possible to adjust the number of house members each state gets every time the population fluctuates.

Hence it’s only done with the official national census.

Which only happens every ten years.

Which happened last in 2020

Which means the next time won’t be until 2030

Get it?

So you mean it would be like Illinois?

I'm not happy with the way IL is, either. DuPage County should be a GOP congressional district, but they've divided it up between the 8th, 6th, and 11th districts with enough Crook County voters to keep a Republican from being elected.

Texas will not add any new districts, they just want to ensure 5 blue/purple districts become solidly red. It is the Texas GOP that want to deny people congressional representation.

All of those are great ideas!

The electoral college is worse than useless, as it limits the election to just a few swing states and imposes bad presidents the voters didn't want.

The Senate gives empty rectangles as much representation as states with millions of people.

Packing SCOTUS is a solution to the unnatural cheating Republicans did to pack it to start with. I think a better solution would be to limit these guys to 10-year terms, with one forced vacancy a year, starting with Thomas, then Roberts, Alito, Kagan, and Sotomayor, in that order.

I would also make the House smaller, maybe 200 members, with larger congressional districts that are non-partisan and competitive.

Final changes I would make.

Put a Sharpie through the Second Amendment. We don't have militias anymore, there's no reason for every idiot to have a gun.

Get rid of the President's pardon power. That's just an abuse.

It's hard for people to have sympathy for Democrats in Texas as long as there's so heavily gerrymandered districts in other states. They should all be eliminated.

15th post
I don’t agree with abolishing the senate, but the electoral college has got to go

Oh, I think the Senate in many ways is worse than the EC.

As bad as the EC is, it only overrode what the people wanted five times in our history. (1824, 1876, 1888, 2000, and 2016). the rest of the time, it confirmed the popular vote.

The Senate has the absurdities of conference committees and laws being reconciled and stuff like that, and it keeps much of anything from getting done.

I view the senate as a necessary evil. A necessary concession to the less populated states so they don’t both and moan

But the EC takes it way too far

So if we get rid of the electoral college and the Senate we are left with gerrymandering states. That doesn’t seem like a solution either.
