The very first thing that must be done is try to understand the reason for Russia to invade. I seriously doubt it is just to prove Putin a tough guy. Do they really believe that the unrest in the Ukrine is a risk to their "national security?" How many times have you heard that excuse used by our leaders for their actions? First try to understand the motive, then try to formulate a counter solution.
That said, the US invaded Afghanistan and Iraq which are pretty much on the door steps to Russia. Their reaction was what? I don't remember any reaction. Yet a Russian warship docks at Cuba and it is the end of détente? Really?
