Now Republicans can practically sit on their asses until the last minute of the mid-term election in 2018 and still win more Senate seats.

Quite true. W was elected to further the Gingrich Revolution. He retreated and went 180 degrees the other way. Gingrich "conservatism" was the tax and spending cut budgets of the "Clinton Economy," the "trickle down" that worked just as Milton Friedman predicted. W abandoned every important aspect of conservatism. He outspend LBJ. He lied to the Congress to socialize senior drugs. He wasted a trillion on No Child and got record low test scores in 2008 to show for it. W spent and spent and spent, and THAT was the DISASTER.

The SOLUTION is to STOP THE SPENDING.
