That Mr. Zelaya acted as if he were above the law, there is no doubt. While Honduran law allows for a constitutional rewrite, the power to open that door does not lie with the president. A constituent assembly can only be called through a national referendum approved by its Congress.

But Mr. Zelaya declared the vote on his own and had Mr. Chávez ship him the necessary ballots from Venezuela. The Supreme Court ruled his referendum unconstitutional, and it instructed the military not to carry out the logistics of the vote as it normally would do.

The top military commander, Gen. Romeo Vásquez Velásquez, told the president that he would have to comply. Mr. Zelaya promptly fired him. The Supreme Court ordered him reinstated. Mr. Zelaya refused.

.Calculating that some critical mass of Hondurans would take his side, the president decided he would run the referendum himself. So on Thursday he led a mob that broke into the military installation where the ballots from Venezuela were being stored and then had his supporters distribute them in defiance of the Supreme Court's order.

The attorney general had already made clear that the referendum was illegal, and he further announced that he would prosecute anyone involved in carrying it out. Yesterday, Mr. Zelaya was arrested by the military and is now in exile in Costa Rica.

It remains to be seen what Mr. Zelaya's next move will be. It's not surprising that chavistas throughout the region are claiming that he was victim of a military coup. They want to hide the fact that the military was acting on a court order to defend the rule of law and the constitution, and that the Congress asserted itself for that purpose, too.

He was put in place through a coup.

The President that was removed from power was democratically elected. The present head of government in Honduras was put in power through a coup, and is not the legal representative of the Hondurian nation. Ol' MadHatter was put in power in his first election legally. The last election is all too much like a Bush election.

I'm not a conservative but I'll answer this regurgitated drivel anyway.

"The President that was removed from power was democratically elected"

AND is the same one who was getting RID of that Democratic process, by attempting to make himself dictator for life. The "coup" probably saved thousands of lives compared to what would have been needed for the people to remove this sloth once his despotic reign was established.

And, you idiot.... The current ousted President is STILL on the ballot, and can still be re-elected. And because of the ouster, there will STILL be an election! He's simply not going to be allowed to declare himself King for life.

What part of the Honduran military acting on the orders of the Honduran Supreme Court did you miss? And then there's this...

Certified Honduran Referendum Results Found
Criminal investigators in Honduras have reportedly found computers containing the certified election results of the referendum which was to confirm Mel Zelaya as president for…however long he wanted to be president, I guess. Anyway, the certified results contained voting tallies, information about the voters, and other electoral information. An example:

One of the district attorneys that participated in the operation that took place this Friday showed reporters an official voting result from the Technical Institute Luis Bogran, of Tegucigalpa, in which the specific number of people that participated in table 345, where there were 550 ballots, 450 of which were votes in favor of Zelaya’s proposal and 30 were against, in addition to 20 blank ballots and 30 ballots, which were nullified.

That’s a very complete report of the election, and contains a wealth of details about the results that would be a credit to the authorities in charge of any election.
Of course, it would be even more impressive if the referendum had actually taken place.

President Zelaya has acted in a manner that should have gotten him removed through legal means. The method of removal is much more reprehensible than the manner in which the President has acted. That is why no nations are supporting those who removed him. Not one other nation.

Rule of law is a two edged sword. Go outside of it without neccessity, no matter how justified you believe your case, and you lose in a lawful society.

What part of that action was not legal did you miss?

Come on, wingnuts, if the removal of President Zelaya was legal, why are there not at least a few nations supporting that action, rather than near universal condemnation of it?
