Assuming for just the moment that there is nothing incriminating in the files, then not showing them could very well be the smoke screen you invoked [perhaps evoked would be a better term], drawing the fire of critics away from everything else they have leveled at him thereby leaving trump free to enact his own agenda, not opening them is like the sweet fragrance that draws insects to the glue strip and allows the critics to believe they have both a cudgel and a story to occupy them and their "gotcha this time" groupies instead, and that would free him up to enact that agenda and in the end he can just hand the files over to "his media allies" to have their field day with.

Of course for this to make any sense you would actually have to believe trump would do such a devious thing.
