NYPD officers save straphanger who fell onto subway tracks in Queens

"Straphanger". Hmmm. The words or terms you never hear, not ever living in the big city.

I've never heard that word before, and no definition that I can easily find by Googling it seems to obviously fit the story. Closest use of the word to relevant would be a passenger in a subway that rides standing, hanging on to a strap; but it is no at all apparent how such a passenger would fall on to the tracks, unless the vehicle is very badly and unsafely designed.

I was beginning to wonder if perhaps there are some who, to avoid paying the fare, somehow ride on the outside of the vehicle, using some sort of strap to hang on to the vehicle. I could see “straphanger” as a term referring to that sort of rider, who would be in real danger of falling off and landing on the tracks.
