They had too much money that could have been better used for services to prevent the need for them — like education and mental health
If they can pull it off, more power to them. Just be sure to leave some of the budget for retraining and/or relocating the cops they lay off as well as other compensation ( severance pay based on years in the force, etc).

Skeptics suggest the $$$ for school officers is simply being shifted from the NYPD budget to education with no other changes of personnel or responsibilities.
Perhaps New York and everywhere else would get more bang for the de-funding buck by starving the War on Drugs into extinction?
