Nurse Jackie is a junkie I hated her manipulations and lying I am glad it is over with her experiencing an OD.
If the deceitful, manipulative aspect was the only side of her personality anyone would be forced by circumstances to agree with your very objective assessment -- and the entire series would have been an inane waste of audience time. In fact there were times when I couldn't help but despise her totally selfish maneuvers. But there was more to the story. And the brilliance of the plot is the way it all came together in the final scene,
Nurse Jackie was presented to us as two separate personalities, the good and the bad. The real point of the story is the way the addictive personality, regardless of its positive aspect, can be transformed into a selfish, scheming liar who routinely deceives even him/her self. The art of the tale is the way this insidious effect is presented to us.
This is not to say all degenerate junkies start off as noble souls. But a substantial percentage of them begin life as decent, productive people who happen to be
addictive personalities (a recognized psychological disorder) and who make the mistake of popping that first pill -- which is the way most narcotic addictions start.
The
Nurse Jackie series was a story within a story, comparable to a Biblical parable. Unless one is willing to look for its meaning the meaning will be lost and watching the series will be a waste of time for them.
Bottom line: Narcotics are, for some, the the devil's embrace.
