One of our favorite movies in our home DVD collection is a western yarn called "Buffalo Girls" very loosely late Victorian era historically based on Martha (Calamity Jane) Canary, Will Bill Hickok, Annie Oakley, Buffalo Bill Cody et al. Calamity Jane sometimes passed herself off as a man which she said, though complicated at times, gave her a freedom few women knew.

But there was absolutely no question suggested in the movie that she was anything other than a perfectly normal heterosexual woman.

If this was the case with a movie about Cathay Williams it should be okay. But I agree if it portrays her as a transvestite it is wokeism as she was also a perfectly normal heterosexual woman.
