Now the we are older, is there anything you are grateful for being a part of?

I’ll grant you that Trump is screwing things up but almost EVERYTHING is better now.

Things were perfect under Joe Biden? Is that why he didn't finish out 1 term and his party replaced him? Or is everything better now that Trump is screwing it all up?

Name one thing Trump has actually "screwed up?"

I am grateful for living in the era of :

Doris Day
Donna Summer
Olivia Newton John
John Candy
Robin Williams
Annie Lennox
Carol Burnett
The 70's
The 80's
Growing up outside
My Grandma
America when it had a sense of humor and people basically got along

In 1987, at the age of 18, I traveled to Europe with my aunt, who never had children of her own. We stayed in Germany for a few nights to visit a friend who had been a German exchange student in my school.

She took us to a street carnival along a river, I believe it might have been the Elbe, but I'm not sure. Our side of the river the sidewalk was filled with color, laughter, and fun: balloons, food, music, rides, laughter.

On the other side was East Germany, with a high wall, barbed wire and armed guards.

I stood on the sidewalk and stared and stared and stared at the dichotomy. I somehow knew this was important. My friend, the German, let me stand and take it in for a long time. Finally, she took my arm and led me away.

Two years later the wall fell.

I believe being there, seeing that was deeply formative of my political beliefs.

This is a thread that basically harkens itself back to what it claims was a better time. I simply challenged that times were better in the 70s/80s. There are lots of threads on what Trump is doing wrong. Pop into any of them.

It wasnt better when Carter was president. It was when Reagan was elected.

Things were certainly freer then. Fewer rules, restrictions and regulations.

Things were also cheaper, easier to live, higher standard of living when in the late 70s, it has been shown that our dollar bought more/ the most of our lifetimes before inflation started overtaking wages for good.

It’s tricky though. Think about housing costs which are higher now. In 1970s the average house was 1500 sqft. It’s now 2250 sqft. A 1970s TV is no comparison to a 2026 TV. Consumer goods like food and clothing are much lower percent of your costs now.

Less rules also resulted in more contaminants in waterways and in your food back then.

A lot of it is how we live. Leisure spending is much higher now. Compare Disney then vs 2026 Disney. Not the same at all.

I wouldn’t trade everything I have now vs what living in 1977 was like. Yuck.

If true then the developers are merely appealing to a high income, more profitable segment of society now.

A 1970s TV was also much costlier to build. Inch for inch, LED technology is much cheaper than analog CRT. The advantage to 50 years is that you learn how to make the same thing both better, easier and cheaper.

My water and food were just fine back in 1970. I used to drink out of my garden hose and it tasted great, and in 1970, I could buy real watermelon with seeds that was the size of a dog. I also got a dozen hand picked fresh ears of corn for $1.00.

Food and necessary household items are way more of a percentage of income now, liar.
I used to get steak once a week, but have not had one in 11 mos now, because I'm not paying retarded prices for it. Last one was $5.99 rib roast.
Pork chops, the other steak. I may go get some tomorrow.
I think they're like $1.67/lb.
No reason in this world for beef to be so expensive.
May start getting lamb, don't care. :dunno:
People are going to eat something, and if beef is overpriced, it will get passed by.

In 1970, all you needed was a pencil and paper to get by. Total cost: 7¢.

Now these days, just in order to function and get by, a person needs a cellular phone system with texting, a computer, internet service, an up to date operating system and web browser, plus web surfing computer skills just to say hello or ask a question.

Total cost now: about $1400-$1500.

PREACH!!!!

I wanted to get a small roast to put in the crockpot a couple weeks ago.
The CHEAPEST small roast the store had was $30.00!!!!

I don't think so. I'll go vegan before I pay that!!!
Which is COMPLETELY IGNORANT and CRIMINAL........because Texas has it's own cattle/beef industry. There's NO REASON for these criminal prices when everything is sourced LOCALLY!!!!

Televisions were more expensive back then. I just saw an old paper where a 20" Color Zenith was like $279. And it weighed close to 200 lbs, I bet.
Oh, the better to watch The American Dream deliver an Atomic elbow on! 😆
It came with a real-deal "clicker", too.

A TV today is almost completely plastic. TV's of the 70's had a very costly blown glass picture tube and high voltage electron gun driven by a 50,000 volt power supply (if color). Today's TV is all mostly on printed microchips.

I remember clearly in the mid-80s a Sony 27" Trinitron costing $999 and that was a good sale price.

If you shop smartly today, you can probably get a far superior 55-60" QLED TV now for about that same price.

James Brown.

Has anyone ever pointed out that James Brown looked a lot like a black Steve McGarrett?

Those were the days when teachers wanted to foster critical thinking. These days, that’s the last thing they want. They want students to be brainwashed into leftism.
There is that broad brush again! All schools, all teachers, and all students! Every single one of them! When did you take the time to visit them all?

I don't see it.

I must admit that JB did a better moon-walk space shuffle.

But McGarrett had his "Book 'em Dano" down pat.

Still, I wouldn't have minded seeing Steve twang out a few blues tunes while JB busted a few heads. :smoke:
