What you need to learn is that it is possible, particularly within a limited region, for temperatures to be higher as one moves closer to the poles. Your objection here is infantile. Unless Rossby waves have accomplished an overturning of the Arctic air mass (as has happened repeatedly in the last several years*), there IS sub-freezing air in the Arctic feeding a polar vortex.

* If you look at the graphic, you will note that the jetstream in a Rossby wave configuration is capable of pulling equatorial air from the Eastern Pacific into northern Canada and the Arctic.
