Nostalgic Depression
Yes, it is a "thing".
Here's what Google A.I. has to say about it................
Nostalgia that causes sickness, depression, or severe emotional distress is commonly referred to today as nostalgic depression. It involves a painful, overwhelming longing for the past, making the present seem void of joy. Historically, this intense form of homesickness/longing was classified as a serious illness, sometimes called melancholia.
Key Aspects of Nostalgic Depression
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is something I have.
I like watching videos on YT of things from and about the 60s thru the 80s when I was growing up.
Being outside every day, not being allowed in the house until dark.
Walking to school.
Fashions, styles, and fads.
Foods, drinks, and restaurants.
Cars, vans, and trucks.
Being a Mall Rat.
All those things.
But I have to stop at a certain point, because I will get sick to my stomach and depressed for the times past.
If only, as kids, we could comprehend the passage of time and the stresses of adulting.......we would have been more happy to BE kids and not constantly be in a hurry to grow up and be out on our own.
Ugh.

Key Aspects of Nostalgic Depression
- Not a Formal Diagnosis: While "nostalgic depression" is used, it is not a recognized clinical diagnosis, but rather a term for negative,,, emotional reactions to excessive past-dwelling.
- The Difference: While normal nostalgia is a sentimental, often positive memory, nostalgic depression occurs when an individual feels their present life is significantly worse than a romanticized past, leading to sadness, grief, or guilt.
- Root Causes: It often stems from loneliness, loss, or feeling unable to regain a happier past life.
- Historical View: In the 17th century, Johannes Hoffer coined "nostalgia" to describe this condition in soldiers, believing it to be a physical sickness causing fevers and heartache.
