Nobody Gets A Trophy

I posted this schools report card....Sounds like a horrible place....

Have you ever been there? I haven't, but I'd bet their problems are more complicated than you want to believe.

Yeah, they always are when trying to avoid accountability…

So, recognizing that a problem isn't simple is "avoiding accountability"? You're not a simpleton, are you?

Calling anyone names that doesn’t bow at your feet, while a school has an 8% proficiency in reading, math, or science smacks of excuse making…

It's not my school and I'm not making any "excuses." I'm sure there is more going on in that school and that district and the homes of those students (for those who have one) than some simplistic "teachers suck!" nonsense. As I said before, there is always plenty of responsibility to go around. Only simpletons think complex problems are simple.

Just read your post here, teachers don’t even factor in your equation…

It's a given that teachers play a vital role in a child's education. YOU seem to think there are NO other factors in the equation. I can tell you that there are many. Do you have any idea how frustrating it is to see an intelligent young person struggle (or worse, just shut down completely or act out in some manner) because you know they have some shit going on at home, or they are homeless, or they are working full-time on the overnight shift, or they are hungry, or they are scared to walk home because they have to pass through several gang territories, etc.? I take my responsibility very seriously, but there ARE other factors, many of which I can't control. Students struggling with such things on top of the usual issues of growing up won't always take help that is offered. I stay late after school almost every day. Most days I don't eat lunch because I know the signs when a student is hungry and too proud to take the free lunch at school, I talk to parents, I give extra help online late into the night, I try to get to know each student personally and just offer to be there - some kids just need someone to listen to them. But I can't fix society so these kids aren't poor or scared or hungry. There is only so much you can do. Get it?

Sounds like you’re dedicated, but, as I’m sure you know, there are many that aren’t…And this school seems to have many that have given up…

It's all connected...

A good way to get a lot of the student population to beat the crap out of the other part of the student population.
That is called peer pressure and is the most effective form of discipline.

Read the comments I posted in the link, talking about this school…They’re devastating…Or don’t, and continue to make excuses…

I already told you I don't make excuses.

Sometimes.
Always, teachers and staff are often not around when bad behavior happens, other students are always there. When other students are affected by bad behavior, they tend to correct it.

Or - the students in the school are failing.
When I was taught to teach in the Army, we were told that if the student fails to learn the material, the onus is on the teacher. It’s the teachers job to present the material in a manner that the student can absorb. My wife was a Special Ed teacher and she agreed with that position.

Read all the posts in this thread (esp. #108). Not gonna rehash the whole thing.
