That's the kind of response that I got today when my fiancée and I went out to dinner and I asked for a box for my French fries. This is such a pet peeve of mine. Granted, the man I saw had on an apron so he was probably a dishwasher or something, but if you live and especially work in this country and especially at a place where people might ask you stuff like a restaurant (I asked him for a box because I couldn't find our waitress) then you should speak or learn to speak English. It drives me crazy! (Hopefully he was at least legal though but I just kept my thoughts to myself until we got back in the car)

Communication takes two (at least).

Don't blame the guy (who knows how long he's been in the country) - blame the restaurant owner who hired him, or being unable/unwilling to pay acceptable wages for Americans or English speaking personal.

Good point. He seemed like a really nice man but yeah he should at least know the English language even if he isn't very good at it.

I shouldn't have to learn Spanish as he's in a mostly English speaking country. That's his job.

You can tell a lot about a person by how they treat low level servers.
Poor guy is just trying to make a living and you are humiliating him because he hasn’t learned your language

Another fake Christian
Jesus would be ashamed of you

Yet in the beginning many who came to America did not speak english.

I don't think that whether one speaks english is a requirement for citizenship.

The law allows for certain modifications to the Oath of Allegiance. For more information please see section 337 of the Immigration Nationality Act (INA) and 8 CFR 337.1(b) . Also see the USCIS Policy Manual Citizenship and Naturalization Guidance.

If he doesn't know any by now already, how was he able to score the job in the first place and to keep it for as long as he has had it so far?

God bless you and him always!!!

Holly

all you need is a translator? There are other employees who may speak both languages. Then if he is washing dishes then it pretty simple.

It's not like people are lining up to become a dishwasher or clean tables in a restaurant.

^^^ I have one co-worker who can translate, but sadly she isn't there every time that a person like her is needed. :( :( :(

God bless you and her always!!!
