Missionaries attacked in India
Bangalore, India, Sep. 27 (UPI) -- Indian police have arrested 15 people after three priests and six nuns were attacked in two separate incidents in the southern state of Kerala.
Two nuns from the Missionaries of Charity were attacked by a mob while bringing food to poor people of the Dalit, or untouchable, caste, in a slum on the outskirts of Kozhikode city, the BBC reported Sunday.
They were reportedly pulled from their jeep and the crosses around their necks were broken. Local people helped them escape to a police station where they called their mission.
When the Mother Superior and six others arrived at the scene, they too were attacked by around 40 people with iron rods. All nine missionaries were hospitalized, most with head injuries.
